I saw a girl with a "Save the Planet" T-Shirt on today...
While doing my afternoon duty at the school I work at I saw a student wearing a "Save the Planet" T-Shirt. The irony of the situation is that my duty is supervising the car loading area at the end of the day. So the girl was waiting for her parent to come in one of the many Hummers and other assorted SUVs that line up everyday, engines idling, to whisk their lovely children home. While thinking about this scene and the fact that the T-shirt she was wearing was probably shipped half-way around the world twice before she bought it made me ponder the question, can and will the U.S. really "go green"? As the cliche goes "habits are hard to break" Well later the same day I read an article from the New York Times that at least made me believe that maybe things are heading in the right direction again. The article talks about how the Bush-Cheney Administration is finally dropping it's efforts to relax pollution limits (Presumably to focus on the dastardly things they can accomplish before they relinquish the reigns of power to the Obama administration). I really would like to believe that we aren't doomed to repeat history and do nothing about alleviating our dependence on foreign oil as we did in the 70's. Ultimately the only things that will change anything are you and I and our actions or inaction.
